What is ABRSM
The ABRSM is an examination board based in the United Kingdom. ABRSM is one of five examination boards accredited by Ofqual to award graded exams and diploma qualifications in music within the UK's National Qualifications Framework. Passing exams will not only enhance your musical journey, it will also help you gain UCAS points if you wish to enroll in a British college.
Practical exams
The practical exams (grades 1 to 8) take place once a year in Portugal (in the summer). This is a face-to-face exam which is composed of various sections:
- Scales and arpeggios
- Sight reading
- Aural tests
- Performance of 3 pieces from different styles and periods
Performance exams
Performance exams (grades 1 to 8) have the same validity as practical exams, but they are totally online and focus on your performance skills. They consist of recording a video with 4 pieces in one take and submitting it.
Music theory exams
Graded exams for theory go from 1 to 8, Grade 5 in theory is compulsory in order to pass practical or performance exams from grade 6 onwards.
